Bio - Rebecca Firestone
Rebecca
Firestone’s
performance background includes over 25 years of dance training,
as well as Aikido, Kung-Fu, and Kupigana Ngumi, an Afrikan
fighting art. Dance styles include West African, Middle Eastern,
and Jewish folkloric. Since coming to California in 1998, she
has added fire performance and avant-garde circus theatre.
After
graduating from Oberlin College in 1986, Rebecca moved to Washington,
D.C., where she studied Aikido under Sensei Mitsugi Saotome,
Senegalese dance with master dancer Assane Konte, Kupigana
Ngumi with Mfundishi Tayari Casel, and Shaolin Kung-Fu with Mfundishi
Bakari Alexander. During this time
she supported herself as a technical writer for a consulting
company that provided decision support analysis
for the United States Postal Service.
In 1993, she moved to Boston
and became a work-crazed yuppie, doing documentation and training
for a telecommunications billing system, traveling to places
like Malaysia, Australia, and London. While in Boston, she studied
Caribbean dance and the Katherine Dunham dance technique with Cle
Douglas, who has
since passed on.
In 1998, weary of the chilly Boston winters, Rebecca
moved to California, where she continued to work in
the software industry while studying Yoga, Middle Eastern Dance,
and circus arts. She participated in several
large-scale Burningman art projects, including the Nebulous Entity
in 1998, the L2K project in 2000,
and the Bonefire performance of 2002. During this time she performed
with the Dancers of the Mystic Sun
under the artistic direction of Azar. She also did ensemble and
solo work with Technomania Circus, with
shows in Oakland, San Francisco, and San Diego.
